Abstract

This study explored collaboration as a process of engaging difference to create shared meaning, with emphasis on shame and the subjective experience of collaboration. The Research Problem was: What is the role of responsive shame in repairing breakdowns in collaboration? The hypothesis was: Working with shame depolarizes the non-responsive shame states of shame-embeddedness and shame-numbness, and this facilitates the repair of breakdowns in collaboration. The Literature Review considers salient literature on collaboration, the intersubjective field, and shame. Sources are drawn from across disciplines including psychology, sociology, neurobiology, and educational theory. Considered together, the three main subject areas revealed the considerable importance of, and inadequate understandings about, the role of shame in the process of collaboration. The methodology for this study utilized Imaginal Inquiry. The participants, who live together in a cohousing community, had the experience of attending to shame using masks in role-play scenarios on challenges to collaboration within the group. The Cumulative Learning for this study, Feathers on the Arrow of Eros – The Role of Responsive Shame in the Process of Collaboration, proposes that responsive vii shame facilitates repair of breakdowns in collaboration through a sensitive response to subtle shifts in the intersubjective field, and this creates a container within which individuals can more readily disidentify from defensive shame enactments. Learning One: The Conflict Within – Ambivalence and Engaging the Shadow of Collaboration, proposes that the process of collaboration can evoke splitting of archetypal collaboration into positive and negative polarities which can contribute to breakdowns in collaboration, and a key step to bridging the split is engaging aware ambivalence. Learning Two: A Ticket to the Fun House – Owning the Multiplicity of Our Unresponsive Shame, proposes that the practice of exploring the multiplicity of non-responsive shame states through visual expression, personification, and embodiment cultivates responsive shame. Learning Three: Come Play with Me – Building Shared Excitement Through Responsive Shame, proposes that, while breakdowns in collaboration are aggravated by polarization of the interest-excitement affect within a group, responsive shame facilitates the mutualization of interest-excitement affect by depolarizing this affect in the group and building shared excitement between individuals. Learning Four: You’ve Got a Friend – Transgressing Taboos Against Dependency and Vulnerability, proposes that engaging responsive shame during collaboration supports healthy dependency and mirroring and, in doing so, transgresses taboos against vulnerability and dependency. The myth of King Arthur’s Round Table and the Grail quest, with Gawan representing feathers on the arrow of Eros, illuminate the vital role of responsive shame in the process of collaboration for engaging difference to create shared meaning.
